Events
In Indianapolis, the entire year revolves around two major events, and arguably one of them has become the whole reason for living in the city in the past fifty years or so. The Indy 500 is arguably the most important single motor race that takes place in the whole world. More glamorous than the Monaco Grand Prix in Formula 1, and certainly one of the most keenly fought and desperately competitive races in the world, winning the Indy 500 is perhaps the highest achievement that any racing car driver can achieve in their entire career.
The Indy 500 race takes place at the famous Brick Yard motor racing circuit in Indianapolis, and is the biggest of all the Indianapolis events. The Indy 500 race actually takes place on the Memorial Day Weekend, and is attended by more than two hundred thousand spectators, who travel to the city from all over the USA and the rest of the world. The 500 mile race takes place over around 3 hours, and is an exciting spectacle from the stands around the high speed oval circuit.
The other major event that takes place at the Indianapolis motor speedway is the United States leg of the annual formula 1 motor racing world championship. While the bragging rights of winning the race are not as important as in the INDY 500, it has become an integral part of the world championship, and one of the most keenly fought races of the year, as well as one of the most glamorous.
If you are traveling to Indianapolis during one of the major annual events such as the motor racing, then it is absolutely essential that you book your accommodation well in advance. There are plenty of hotels in the city, but thanks to the massive demand for accommodation during a race weekend.
Other major Indianapolis events include the smaller NASCAR races and other minor events that take place at the racetrack, while due to the importance of the city in the world of motor sport, it is also a popular place for a motor show, and many of the racing teams travel to the city to exhibit their latest models.
