Transportation
From the main airport – Indianapolis International Airport, transportation into the center of the city is a fairly straightforward proposition, and there are a number of different options available for any visitors. From regular taxi services to independently rented cars through to public transport such as buses, and even private mini bus shuttles and limousines offered by the many Indianapolis hotels, there are plenty of ways of getting around Indianapolis.
Since the 1950s, Indianapolis transportation has been dominated by the buses. After the trams and trolley buses were removed from the streets in the mid 1950s, the city has invested heavily in creating a comprehensive network of public transport that serves all areas of Indianapolis and its surrounding areas.
If you are planning to spend your time in Indianapolis simply in the center of town, then access to Public buses is generally perfectly adequate in terms of getting from one attraction to another, and if your main reason for visiting is to visit the Indy 500 or another race, then it is wise to use one of the many special buses, as these mean that you will not need to queue for hours when it is time to leave the race track at the end of the day.
If your intention is to leave the city behind, and explore some of the areas close to Indianapolis, then it is a great idea to hire a car in the city and pick it up when you arrive. Indianapolis car hire is generally quite cheap - particularly if you book it through one of the larger companies, and you can save up to 50% by making your reservation online.
Going out in the evening in Indianapolis is great fun, but many of the main entertainment areas are located some way away from the main hotels, and getting back to your room at the end of the night can be inconvenient. One of the best options for night time transport that is available for visitors to Indianapolis is the taxi service. These cars are available 24 hours a day and all operate on a meter system, so the prices are completely consistent. Expect to pay a 10% tip at the end of the journey.
